WHAT IS THE ‘HEALTHIEST’ ALCOHOL?

(NewsNation) — Some people practice Dry January, which means no alcohol consumption during this month. But others may be looking to cut down the amount they drink instead.

It’s well known that alcohol can cause cancer and lead to other health problems. Alcohol consumption is the third leading cause of cancer in the U.S. after tobacco and obesity.

The U.S. Surgeon General issued a new advisory on Jan. 3, laying out a series of recommendations including adding a health warning label on alcoholic drinks to now include cancer risk.

Regardless of warnings, people will continue to drink liquor. The key is moderation, some experts suggest. And some health benefits, such as lower risk of heart disease, could come from moderate drinking.

Some alcoholic beverages are less unhealthy to choose from. What are they?

How drinking alcohol can affect your health

What is the healthiest alcohol?

Alcohol isn’t necessarily “healthy,” but some are better than others.

A glass of champagne or sparkling white wine has about 100 calories for a standard serving size of 5 ounces.

Some spirits without added sugar are not as bad as some mixed drinks. This includes rum, tequila and vodka, which is 1.5 ounces per serving. However, if opting for a mixed drink, a Bloody Mary or Mojito are good options calorie-wise.

Kombucha may be a good alternative as it is only about 100 calories and can offer portion control compared to hard liquor.

Lastly, light beer is also low in calories for a 12-ounce bottle.
